With the vast amount of information floating around on the internet about pet health, deciding the best diet for your dog can be confusing.
No matter which diet you pick, there is always going to be an opposing side that disagrees with that particular philosophy.
I tend to go with scientific evidence, combined with common sense and gut instinct.
In today’s post, I’d like to share with you some of the tips that I’ve learned over the years to give my dogs the perfect diet.
No matter what type of diet you are feeding your dog, even if you add ONE of these foods to your dogs dinner bowl you’ll be significantly reducing the risk of many common diseases.
My goal is to always bring you tips that are not only tangible but also practical for the average Australian dog owner.
Due to budget and other restraints, we are not all able to give our dogs a gold standard diet but these tips and foods that I’m about to show you are affordable for anyone to implement.
Here are my top nutritional tips for increasing your dog’s diet today:
Doggy Superfood No.1: Sardines
If there is one food that you can easily put into any dog’s diet that will instantly increase the nutritional density it’s got to be Sardines.
Mostly made of protein and healthy fats, Sardines also contain many trace minerals essential to dog health like vitamin B12, Vitamin D which helps fight cancer.
Sardines also contain high amounts of Phosphorus which plays an important role in processing fats and carbohydrates in dogs, and also helps synthesize protein for building muscle, repairing muscles, and transporting vitamins around the body.
Another reason Sardines are a nutritional powerhouse is because they are also high in Omega 3 fatty acids which we know from mountains of research helps dogs in many ways like cancer prevention and normal cell and brain function.
Lastly, Sardines also contains a vitamin called Selenium which has been found to slow down the natural aging process and can help maintain regular cell function and combat inflammation.
Doggy Superfood No.2: Green mussels
Green lipped mussel have been used by humans to treat inflammation and arthritis for many years. Canine arthritis afflicts an estimated 70 to 80 percent of dogs in certain breeds.
“We know that over 50% of dogs over the age of eight start to develop arthritis in various joints” – Dr. Karyl Hurley"
Mussels themselves all contain a variety of proteins, minerals, vitamins, omega 3s, healthy enzymes, polypeptides, chondroitin sulphated, glycosaminoglycans, polysaccharides and glycoproteins.
These supplementary nutrients aid in the preservation of mobility and joint health, functional cartilage, a healthy heart, skin and overall health concerns.
Indeed, studies back up that a diet enriched with GLM is a great alternative to conventional arthritis/joint medication.
Doggy Superfood No.3: Blueberries
Blueberries are one of the most nutritional dense foods we can eat, and the same goes for our dogs. They contain Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Manganese, and are jam packed with antioxidants. What are antioxidants?
They protect our pets bodies from damage by free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage cellular structures and contribute to aging and diseases like cancer, so they are kind of important.
One of the more important factors jobs that antioxidants do is prevent and repair damaged DNA which can slow down the aging process.
Blueberries also help protect from heart disease and support normal brain and cell function. A 2006 Study revealed that suggests that dogs fed blueberries while exercising can help protected against oxidative damage.
Doggy Superfood No.4: Coconut oil
Coconut oil has a host of benefits from clearing up skin conditions to aiding in digestion.
Simply by adding a little bit to your dog’s food you can clear up itchy skin caused by eczema and allergies, and dermatitis. It can even reduce allergic reactions.
Coconut oil has been said to be the ultimate in maintaining healthy skin and human studies tell us it can help improve moisture in the skin. This is also the case for dogs and not to mention it helps maintain an amazing coat.
We also know from studies that coconut oil improves digestion and nutrient absorption and can assist in weight management.
And if that’s not enough, we know that adding a little coconut oil to your dog’s dish can support immune function and prevent infection and disease.
Doggy Superfood No.5: Turmeric
I'm sure most of you have heard of turmeric, Turmeric is a plant that has a very long history of medicinal use, dating back nearly 4000 years.
Modern medicine has begun to recognize turmerics importance, as indicated by the over 3000 publications dealing with turmeric that have come out within the last 25 years.
It can help protect brain cells, maintain a healthy immune response, aids healthy heart function, helps maintain positive well being, promotes skin health, and enhances detoxification.
Curcumin (also known as curcuminoids or phenolic compounds) is the active ingredient in turmeric. Multiple studies have shown that Curcumin can reduce the growth of cancerous cells in the laboratory and inhibit the growth of tumors in test animals.
“There is no doubt that these 5 nutrients are some of nature’s greatest nutritional powerhouses, however getting all of these components in one diet can be difficult, especially with some of the fussier four-legged friends.”
Bonus Superfood: Kangaroo Meat Based Treats
What if I told you there was a way you can get a nutritional boost in something your dogs will eat up with zero resistance?
Well for those of you looking for an easier option that won’t take a lot of convincing of your furry friends, Kangaroo meat treats is one of the most nutritionally dense foods you can feed a dog.
Kangaroo meat contains omega 3’s which help lower inflammation. Lowering inflammation is a critical component of fighting cancer progression, reducing your dog's joint pain, and allergy symptoms.
Recent studies have shown that wild Kangaroo meat itself has a lower inflammatory response when compared to traditional farmed meats like beef.
So besides being extremely palatable to dogs, it’s better for health, it’s loaded with cancer-fighting nutrients, healthy enzymes, a variety of minerals and vitamins and it’s a highly digestible protein.
